ABOUT GRANADA MARQUET

Marquetry is the quintessential Granadan craft, a legacy of the Arab presence in Al-Andalus and continuously improved through the centuries by the artisans who work with care and elegance.

This art is believed to date from the 14th century, influenced by the ornamental work done on embossed and polychrome leathers in 12th-century Cordoba.

The technique and designs were transferred to Muslim Granada, and the wood inlay was enriched. In the Christian era, always inspired by the ornamentation of the Alhambra, the splendor of this traditional craft was achieved, the learning of which has been passed down from parents to children.

The marquetry artisan works with a wide variety of materials, such as bone, mother-of-pearl, and selected wood veneers, including walnut, mahogany, cedar, mulberry, and socamore. Cutting and removing strips, creating stars and frets of different shapes and colors, which, once assembled and cut, are glued onto the surface of the wood, until it is completely covered as if it were a mosaic, forming the most elaborate designs and complex shapes.

Once the piece is covered, it is then polished and varnished.
