Henna (from Hispano-Arabic *al-ḥínna*, itself from Arabic *al-ḥinnā´*) is a reddish-brown natural dye used for hair and also in a skin-coloring technique called mehndi. It is made from the dried leaves and petioles of *Lawsonia alba* Lam. (*Lawsonia inermis* L.). This dye is commonly used in India, Pakistan, Yemen, the Middle East, and North Africa. Mehndi patterns are quite intricate, and in some cultures, they are used as bridal adornments. In the West, it has been used, though not widely, since the 1970s.

To prepare henna paste, the leaves are crushed into a brownish-green powder and mixed with essential oils and lemon juice, which release the dye from the leaves, and sugar for consistency. When applied to the skin, the dye turns pale orange and darkens to a reddish-brown over several hours. In some countries, especially India, henna paste is sold in cones ready for use. The duration of the dye varies depending on skin thickness, but it only lasts for a few days.
